The Origin of Fried Potatoes

No matter how you eat them, covered in ketchup, dipped in mayonnaise, dunked in Fry Sauce, or paired with wasabi powder, fried potatoes are delightful. The origins of this tasty treat traces back to the Andes mountains where they were discovered being eaten by the high-mountain tribes by the Spanish Conquistadors. This cuisine made its way to the English, Irish, German, Spanish, Flemish, and Indian cultures after being traded along the well-known trade routes of the Old World. The name “fries” when applied to the fried potatoes was first known to be used in 1789 just prior to the French Revolution, when they were sold by street vendors in Paris.

While these fries were similar to what we know and eat today, they were simply single fried slices of potato, rather than the twice-fried items that we enjoy in modern times. The double frying method is believed to have originated in Belgium, used in popular cultural dishes known as Steak Frites and Moules Frites. However, if the current method began in Belgium, how did they become known as French fries around the globe. Many believe that the term comes from the actual cut of the potatoes into long and thin strips. The term first appeared in print in 1918 and stuck, with many people still calling any type of fried potatoes French fries, regardless of the thickness or cut style.
